This study aimed to investigate the interactions between corn particle size (PS) and conditioning temperature (CT) on the performance, carcass traits, intestinal morphology, and immune responses in broilers fed a corn-soybean meal-based diet. A total of 360 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly allocated into six dietary treatments in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement, consisting of two corn PS (finely ground with geometric mean diameter (GMD) of 357 µm (PSF) vs. coarsely ground corn with GMD of 737 µm (PSC), and three CT [unconditioned (CTU), conditioned at 75 °C (CT75) and 90 °C (CT90)]. Birds were accommodated in 30 pens with five replicates and 12 chicks per each pen. There was no interaction between corn PS and CT on the growth performance and immune response of broilers at any growth phases. However, during the starter (0-10 days) period, the average daily weight gain (ADWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of PSF-fed birds were significantly improved compared to those fed PSC (p < 0.05). During the starter (0-10 days) and grower (11-24 days) periods, increasing the conditioning temperature of corn increased the ADWG, while in the starter phase only the CT75 caused a lower FCR (p < 0.05). Broilers fed PSF corn showed the lowest FCR during the finisher (25-42 days) period compared to those fed PSC (p < 0.05). Conditioning corn at 75 °C reduced FCR during the finisher (25-42 days) period compared to the birds fed CTU and CT90 corn (p < 0.05). In whole experimental periods (1-42 days), PSF and CT75 treatment increased the ADWG compared to the PSC and CTU (p < 0.05). The CT75 treatment improved primary total anti-sheep red blood cell (SRBCs) titer (IgT) and IgM and secondary IgT and IgG responses compared to the other experimental groups (CTU and CT90) (p < 0.05). No significant PS × CT interaction was found on the Newcastle disease (ND) antibody titer of broiler chickens (p > 0.05). Feeding CT75 corn reduced duodenum and jejunum relative lengths compared to the birds fed diets containing CTU corn. Significant PS × CT interactions (p < 0.05) were observed for villus height, villus height to crypt depth, crypt depth, muscle thickness, and absorption surface area of the jejunum. The highest carcass yield was observed in the PSF-CT75 group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of finely ground corn (PSF) conditioned at 75 °C (CT75) was beneficial to growth performance, development of the digestive tract, jejunum histomorphometry and the immune responses of broilers.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a prevalent health condition that requires significant attention and intervention due to its multifaceted nature. It encompasses a variety of ailments such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, and dyslipidemia. Despite extensive research, the underlying pathophysiology of MetS is not entirely understood, and current synthetic drugs used to treat it have adverse effects and can be expensive. Therefore, natural products are being investigated as a potential alternative treatment for MetS. This chapter provides an overview of studies on natural products as a treatment for MetS. The available evidence suggests that bioactive phytochemicals and herbal medicines, such as curcumin, resveratrol, Nigella sativa, Hibiscus sabdariffa, and Theobroma cacao, have the potential to treat MetS effectively. Furthermore, natural products can be explored as a novel drug discovery approach for MetS. However, it is imperative to conduct well-designed randomized controlled trials with large sample sizes to confirm these findings. Based on our review, we conclude that natural products could be a promising alternative for treating MetS. Further research is warranted to explore this potential fully. The use of natural products for MetS treatment could reduce the reliance on synthetic drugs, many of which have harmful side effects and are costly. The development of natural products as a treatment for MetS could have significant implications for public health, and we encourage further research in this area.

INTRODUCTION: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has a significant impact on society and quality of life. Current treatments are ineffective, and new investigational drugs are necessary. AREAS COVERED: Numerous potential therapies are developing, targeting different areas such as cannabinoid signaling, opioid receptors, tachykinin (NK2) receptors, ß3-adrenergic receptors, intestinal microbiota, inflammation, and 5HT receptors. Clinical trial evidence has shown that loperamide, eluxadoline, alosetron, ramosetron, bile acid sequestrants, and rifaximin can modulate GI alterations and benefit patients with IBS-D. Among the potential therapies, ibodutant, ibudilast, blautix, BOS-589, solabegron, vibegron, olorinab, ebastine, and ORP-101 have demonstrated possible effects but remain confirmed. EXPERT OPINION: Individuals with IBS-D require cost-effective treatment options that do not impede their productivity or that of their caregivers. This is necessary for consistent healthcare and improved quality of life. Therefore, we should focus on developing new, efficient, and affordable medications for IBS-D. The government, insurers, and society must recognize this need and collaborate to ensure its fulfillment.

BACKGROUND: Enzyme supplementation and the inclusion of fibre in the barley-based diets have been some of the alternatives proposed to improve productivity in the absence of growth promoters. OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to investigate the effect of adding sunflower hulls (SFH), a multi-enzyme carbohydrate, and feed forms (mash and pellet) on performance and some physiological parameters in broiler chickens fed barley containing diets. METHODS: Treatments were two feed forms (mash vs. pelleted), and four diets consisted of a barley-based diet (control, CTL) or test diets which contained either SFH at 30 g/kg, enzyme (ENZ; 0.2 g/kg) or combination of SFH and enzyme (SFH + ENZ). RESULTS: The results showed that average daily feed intake and average daily gain were significantly increased in chickens that were fed ENZ (p < 0.05). The highest digestibility of ether extract (EE) was observed in the treatment containing SFH and SFH + ENZ (p < 0.05). The highest population of Lactobacillus spp. was observed in the treatment containing SFH (p < 0.05). The villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratios of duodenum and jejunum were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in broilers fed pellet diets compared to the mash. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that pellet diets reduce digesta viscosity and harmful microorganisms (Escherichia coli), increase growth performance, and improve intestinal morphology in barley-based diets. Moreover, SFH and ENZ had favourable effects on EE digestibility and caecal microbial population of broilers fed with barley containing diets.

BACKGROUND: Cinnamic acid, an active compound in cinnamon spp., has anti-inflamatory and antioxidant characteristics and is favorable in managing inflammatory bowel diseases. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate cinnamic acid's effects on colitis in rats. METHODS: To induce colitis in experimental rats, excluding the sham group, a 4% intrarectal solution of acetic acid was administered. The rats were then given oral doses of cinnamic acid at 30, 45, and 90 mg/kg for two days. The animals were assessed for macroscopic and microscopic changes, and the levels of inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured using Eliza kits. Additionally, real-time PCR was performed to examine the gene level of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4) in the colon. RESULTS: Effective reduction of inflammation in acetic acid-induced colitis was achieved through cinnamic acid at doses of 45 and 90 mg/kg. The decrease was achieved by inhibiting the activities of TNF-α, IL-6, and MPO while downregulating the expression of TLR-4. It is important to note that macroscopic and microscopic evaluations were significant in determining the effectiveness of cinnamic acid in reducing inflammation. CONCLUSION: Downregulation of inflammatory cytokines and TLR-4 expression may contribute to cinnamic acid's anti-inflammatory effect.

OBJECTIVE: Urine alkalinization prevents nephrotoxicity in patients receiving high-dose methotrexate (HDMTX). While the standard approach involves IV sodium bicarbonate, alternative oral bicarbonate regimens are crucial in drug shortages and outpatient settings. This study aims to review the efficacy and safety of such regimens. METHODS: PubMed, WOS, and Scopus were systematically searched using the PRISMA protocol for relevant studies involving human subjects, including randomized clinical trials, retrospective, prospective, cohort, case reports, and case series studies. There were no restrictions on language, time, or age group. Qualified and eligible papers were used to extract data on efficacy and safety indicators, and the final relevant records were assessed for quality using the Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies-of Interventions (ROBINS-I) assessment tool. RESULTS: 12 studies with 1212 participants were included in the systematic review, with pooled data from 8 studies used for meta-analysis. No significant differences in mean differences (MDs) or odds ratio (OR) were found after the oral bicarbonate regimen, except for when urine pH fell to < 7 (MD: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.32, 1.5, P < 0.05) and the incidence of diarrhea (OR: 2.92, 95% CI: 1.69, 5.05, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: An oral bicarbonate regimen is a safe and effective way to alkalize HDMTX urine, providing a viable and cost-effective alternative to IV protocols. BACKGROUND: Visceral hypersensitivity (VH) is an overreaction of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract to various stimuli and is characterized by hyperalgesia and/or allodynia. VH contributes to the etiology of many GI dysfunctions, particularly irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Although the exact mechanisms underlying VH are yet to be found, inflammation and oxidative stress, psychosocial factors, and sensorimotor alterations may play significant roles in it. OBJECTIVE: In this review, we provide an overview of VH and its pathophysiological function in GI disorders. Adverse effects of synthetic drugs may make herbal agents a good candidate for pain management. Therefore, in this review, we will discuss the efficacy of herbal agents in the management of VH with a focus on their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potentials. METHODS: Data were extracted from clinical and animal studies published in English between 2004 and June, 2020, which were collected from PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Cochrane Library. RESULTS: Overall, Radix, Melissia, Glycyrrhizae, Mentha, and Liquorice were the most efficient herbals for VH management in IBS and dyspepsia, predominantly through modulation of the mRNA expression of transient receptor potential vanilloid type-1 (TRPV1) and suppression of 5- hydroxytryptamine 3 (5-HT3) or the serotonin receptors. CONCLUSION: Considering the positive effects of herbal formulations in VH management, further research on novel herbal and/or herbal/chemical preparations is warranted.

Animal-based test systems have traditionally been used to screen for the potential teratogenic activity of drugs. Still, their deficits in predicting precise human-specific outcomes and ethical concerns have led to a need for alternative approaches. In vitro, teratogenicity testing using cell cultures or other in vitro systems is a potential alternative. Of the different in vitro platforms, the mouse embryonic stem cell test (mEST) is currently the most widely used and validated in vitro test for assessing the potential effects of teratogens on early embryonic development. The mEST involves exposing mouse embryonic stem cells to the test compound and monitoring their differentiation for several days.Nevertheless, its predictive ability was comparatively lower when distinguishing weak developmental toxicants from non-toxic substances. Since then, several modifications and adaptations of the mEST protocol have been developed. This chapter describes an alternative method based on molecular approaches to predict embryotoxicity. This method, originated from the mEST, analyzes the expression of differentiation genes involved in the development of mesoderm, endoderm, and stoderm and allows screening embryo-toxicants with different mechanisms of action. The hanging drops embryoid bodies used in the original mEST protocol have been replaced with monolayer culture, and thus the process has been shortened. In general, the method shows higher predictability compared with the traditional ones.

INTRODUCTION: This study compares diabetes management between pediatric and adult patients and identifies treatment challenges and gaps. AREAS COVERED: We searched PubMed and Clinicaltrails.gov databases for studies published from 2001 to 2023 on diabetes management in different age groups. EXPERT OPINION: Research shows children have lower insulin sensitivity, clearance, and ß cell function than adults. The US FDA only allows insulin, metformin, and liraglutide as antidiabetic medication options for children. However, some off-label drugs, like meglitinides, sulfonylureas, and alogliptin, have demonstrated positive results in treating certain types of diabetes caused by gene mutations. It's crucial to adopt personalized and precise approaches to managing diabetes in pediatrics, which vary from those used for adult patients. New studies support the classification of type 2 diabetes into several subtypes based on age, BMI, glycemia, homeostasis model estimates, varying insulin resistance, different rates of complications , and islet autoantibodies. With this insight, prevention, treatment, and precision medicine of diabetes might be changed. More research is necessary to assess the safety and efficacy of different antidiabetic drugs and improve diabetes treatment for children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The consumption of fast absorption sources containing caffeine, such as caffeinated gum and coffee mouth rinsing, has been considered a practical nutritional strategy among athletes. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of early absorption sources containing caffeine on the performance of female table tennis players. METHOD: Eighteen female table tennis players randomly participated in this randomized, double-blind, and crossover designed study. Before starting the test, the participants attended a familiarization session. In each test session, participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions including chewing caffeinated gum (CG, n = 6), coffee mouth rinsing (CMR, n = 6) and placebo capsule (PLA, n = 6). All participants consumed caffeine with an average dose of ∼3 to 4.5 mg·kg-1. The one-week interval was considered a washout period for each condition. Each test session included measurement of functional, skill and cognitive tests. Skill tests included serve, forehand drive, backhand push and counter tests. The Cognitive function measured by color recognition test, and functional tests included agility, hand movement speed, the explosive power of the upper body and lower body, hand-eye coordination and hand grip strength tests. The collected data were analyzed (with SPSS Windows software) by repeated measure ANOVA analysis and Bonferroni post hoc test at P ≤ 0.05 level. RESULTS: The findings of the present study illustrated that CG and CMR increased significantly agility and reduced the amounts of errors in the cognitive test compared to PLA (p < 0.05), While there was no significant difference between CG and CMR (p > 0.05). Also, CG and CMR compared to PLA and CMR compared to CG rose significantly hand movement speed and movement speed (p < 0.05), and CMR compared to PLA increased significantly hand-eye coordination, isometric hand strength, service accuracy and forehand drive (p < 0.05). However, CG compared to PLA and CMR had no significant effect on hand-eye coordination, isometric hand strength, service accuracy and forehand drive (p > 0.05). In addition, CG and CMR enhanced significantly the explosive power of the lower body compared to PLA (p < 0.05), While there was no significant difference between CG and CMR (p > 0.05). Also, CG and CMR compared to PLA and CG compared to CMR had no significant effect on the explosive power of the upper body, backhand, and counter skills (p > 0.05). Furthermore, CG increased significantly accuracy in the service test compared to PLA (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: According to the results, it seems that early absorption sources of caffeine (CMR and CG) are efficient strategies for improving the specific performance of female table tennis players. However, allegedly CMR and CG have a better effect on functional and cognitive tests compared to skill tests.

The important feature of petunia in tissue culture is its unpredictable and genotype-dependent callogenesis, posing challenges for efficient regeneration and biotechnology applications. To address this issue, machine learning (ML) can be considered a powerful tool to analyze callogenesis data, extract key parameters, and predict optimal conditions for petunia callogenesis, facilitating more controlled and productive tissue culture processes. The study aimed to develop a predictive model for callogenesis in petunia using ML algorithms and to optimize the concentrations of phytohormones to enhance callus formation rate (CFR) and callus fresh weight (CFW). The inputs for the model were BAP, KIN, IBA, and NAA, while the outputs were CFR and CFW. Three ML algorithms, namely MLP, RBF, and GRNN, were compared, and the results revealed that GRNN (R2≥83) outperformed MLP and RBF in terms of accuracy. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the relative importance of the four phytohormones. IBA exhibited the highest importance, followed by NAA, BAP, and KIN. Leveraging the superior performance of the GRNN model, a genetic algorithm (GA) was integrated to optimize the concentration of phytohormones for maximizing CFR and CFW. The genetic algorithm identified an optimized combination of phytohormones consisting of 1.31 mg/L BAP, 1.02 mg/L KIN, 1.44 mg/L NAA, and 1.70 mg/L IBA, resulting in 95.83% CFR. To validate the reliability of the predicted results, optimized combinations of phytohormones were tested in a laboratory experiment. The results of the validation experiment indicated no significant difference between the experimental and optimized results obtained through the GA. This study presents a novel approach combining ML, sensitivity analysis, and GA for modeling and predicting callogenesis in petunia. The findings offer valuable insights into the optimization of phytohormone concentrations, facilitating improved callus formation and potential applications in plant tissue culture and genetic engineering.

INTRODUCTION: Polypharmacy, which uses multiple medications to treat chronic illnesses, is common among elderly patients. However, it can lead to drug interactions, especially with gastrointestinal (GI) medicines that are extensively used. These drug interactions can have severe consequences and pose a significant challenge to healthcare providers. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the underlying mechanisms of these interactions and develop strategies to minimize medication errors. AREAS COVERED: We analyzed databases on GI illnesses common in older adults, including GERD, peptic ulcer disease, IBS, IBD, constipation, and diarrhea. Our research identified noteworthy drug interactions and utilized major electronic databases such as USFDA, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar until 15 May 202315 May 2023, along with a review of reference lists. EXPERT OPINION: Aging can affect how the body processes drugs, leading to an increased risk of drug interactions. Therefore, healthcare professionals must carefully evaluate a patient's medical history and health condition to design personalized treatment plans.

The toxicology field is concerned with the impact of organophosphorus (OP) compounds on human health. These compounds have been linked to an increased risk of neurological disorders, including neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental diseases. This article aims to review studies on the role of OP compounds in developing these neurological disorders and explore how genetic variations can affect susceptibility to the neurotoxicity of these pesticides. Studies have shown that exposure to OP compounds can lead to the development of various neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, intellectual disability, and other developmental neurotoxicities. Apart from inhibiting the cholinesterase enzyme, OP compounds are believed to cause other pathological mechanisms at both the extracellular level (cholinergic, serotonergic, dopaminergic, glutamatergic, and GABAergic synapses) and the intracellular level (oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, autophagy, and apoptosis) that contribute to these disorders. Specific genetic polymorphisms, including PON1, ABCB1, NOS, DRD4, GST, CYP, and APOE, have increased the risk of developing OP-related neurological disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Acute gastrointestinal cramping pain (GICP) is a debilitating condition that affects many people worldwide, significantly reducing their quality of life. As such, prompt treatment is crucial. AREAS COVERED: This article will explore relevant literature from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Additionally, we searched ClinicalTrials.gov and the WHO ICTRP database for the latest clinical trials. EXPERT OPINION: Consensus dictates that antispasmodics such as hyoscine-N-butyl bromide and mebeverine should be the primary treatment for GICP. If these prove ineffective, patients can switch to an antispasmodic with a different mode of action or add acetaminophen/NSAIDs for more severe cases. Currently, several antispasmodics are undergoing clinical trials, including drotaverine, alverine, pinaverium, otilonium bromide, fenoverine, tiropramide, otilonium bromide, trimebutine, and peppermint oil. Well-designed head-to-head studies are necessary to evaluate current antispasmodics' safety, efficacy, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacoeconomics profiles. Recent studies have shown that fixed-dose combinations of antispasmodics + NSAIDs or two different antispasmodics can improve patient compliance and synergistically reduce GICP. Therefore, it is recommended that the global availability and accessibility of these products be enhanced.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) often remain untreated because they are difficult to heal, caused by reduced skin sensitivity and impaired blood vessel formation. In this study, we propose a novel approach to manage DFUs using a multifunctional hydrogel made from a combination of alginate and gum arabic. To enhance the healing properties of the hydrogel, we immobilized nerve growth factor (NGF), within specially designed mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN). The MSNs were then incorporated into the hydrogel along with carnosine (Car), which further improves the hydrogel's therapeutic properties. The hydrogel containing the immobilized NGF (SiNGF) could control the sustain release of NGF for >21 days, indicating that the target hydrogel (AG-Car/SiNGF) can serve as a suitable reservoir managing diabetic wound regeneration. In addition, Car was able to effectively reduce inflammation and significantly increase angiogenesis compared to the control group. Based on the histological results obtained from diabetic rats, the target hydrogel (AG-Car/SiNGF) reduced inflammation and improved re-epithelialization, angiogenesis, and collagen deposition. Specific staining also confirmed that AG-Car/SiNGF exhibited improved tissue neovascularization, transforming growth factor-beta (TGFß) expression, and nerve neurofilament. Overall, our research suggests that this newly developed composite system holds promise as a potential treatment for non-healing diabetic wounds.

Antimicrobial peptides have appeared to be promising candidates for therapeutic purposes due to their broad antimicrobial activity and non-toxicity. Histatin-5 (Hst-5) is a notable salivary antimicrobial peptide that exhibited therapeutic properties in the oral cavity. Oral mucositis is an acute inflammation of the oral cavity, following cancer therapy. The current treatment methods of oral mucositis have low effectiveness. The aim of this study was to design, formulate and characterize a mucoadhesive gel delivery system for Hst-5 usage in the treatment of oral mucositis. Carbopol 934 and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) have been used in the development of a Hst-5 mucoadhesive gel that was optimized by using Box-Behnken design. The optimized formulation was evaluated in-vitro, based on mucoadhesive strength, viscoelasticity, spreadability, release rate, peptide secondary structure analysis, antimicrobial activity, and storage stability. The efficacy of Hst-5 gel was assessed in vivo in a chemotherapy-induced mucositis model. The results showed a sustained release of Hst-5 from the new formulation. Hst-5 gel exerted antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. The histopathological, immunohistochemical and statistical analysis showed that the Hst-5 gel had wound healing activity in vivo. The findings of this study indicate that the mentioned compound possesses promising potential as a novel and efficient therapeutic agent in managing oral mucositis. Moreover, the results suggest that the compound is commercially feasible for further development and utilization.

Arsenic is among the most critical environmental toxicants associated with many human disorders. However, its effect on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is contradictory. This systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis aim to update information on the association between arsenic exposure and the risk of T2DM. The sample type (drinking water, urine, blood, and nails) conducted the subgroup analysis. Evaluation of the high vs. low arsenic concentrations showed a significant association between drinking water arsenic (OR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.20-2.08) and urinary arsenic (OR: 1.37, 95% CI: 1.24-1.51) with the risk of T2DM. The linear dose-response meta-analysis showed that each 1 µg/L increase in levels of drinking water arsenic (OR: 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00-1.01) and urinary arsenic (OR: 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00-1.02) was associated with a 1% increased risk of T2DM. The non-linear dose-response analysis indicated that arsenic in urine was associated with the risk of T2DM (Pnon-linearity<0.001). However, this effect was not statistically significant for arsenic in drinking water (Pnon-linearity=0.941). Our findings suggest that blood arsenic was not significantly linked to the increased risk of T2DM in high vs. low (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 0.85-1.71), linear (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 0.99-1.09), and non-linear (Pnon-linearity=0.365) analysis. Also, nail arsenic was not associated with the risk of T2DM in this meta-analysis (OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 0.69-2.59). This updated dose-response meta-analysis indicated that arsenic exposure was significantly correlated with the risk of T2DM.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is a widely used pesticide that can impair body organs. Nonetheless, metformin is known for its protective role against dysfunction at cellular and molecular levels led by inflammatory and oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the modulatory impacts of metformin on CPF-induced heart and lung damage. Following the treatment of Wistar rats with different combinations of metformin and CPF, plasma, as well as heart and lung tissues, were isolated to examine the level of oxidative stress biomarkers like reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA), inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis alpha (TNF-α), high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) gene, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage, lactate, ADP/ATP ratio, expression of relevant genes (TRADD, TERT, KL), and along with histological analysis. Based on the findings, metformin significantly modulates the impairments in heart and lung tissues induced by CPF.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feed form and nutrient density on growth performance, blood parameters, and intestinal traits of broiler breeder pullets during grower (7-19 wk) and pre-breeder (19 weeks to 5% production) periods. A total of 450 female broiler breeder pullets were used in a completely randomized design with a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement including 3 feed forms (mash, crumble, and pellet) and 2 nutrient densities (standard diet with the nutrient requirement of Ross 308 parent stock nutrition specification, and diluted diet by using sunflower hull to have 10% lower nutrient than the standard diet). Five replicates with 15 pullets per replicate were allocated to each of the 6 treatments. Blood samples were collected at 19 wk of age. Egg production reached 5% in the mid of 25 wk. Results showed that pullets fed crumble or pellet diets had greater body weight gain and a lower feed to gain ratio (F:G; P < 0.001). Diet dilution led to a decrease in body weight gain while increasing the F:G (P < 0.05). Pullets fed the pellet diets had shorter eating times than those fed crumble diets, whereas the longest eating time belonged to pullets fed mash diets (P < 0.001). Pullets fed pellet diet had a greater heterophil to lymphocyte (H/L) ratio than those fed crumble or mash diets (P = 0.007). Diluting the diet led to a decrease in the H/L ratio (P = 0.026). Neither feed form nor nutrient density had a significant effect on body weight uniformity, blood glucose and lipid concentrations, liver enzyme activities, and intestinal traits (P > 0.05). It can be concluded that pelleted or crumbled diets with lower nutrient density can be considered in broiler breeder's pullets feeding with no detrimental effect on their performance or health state.

The influence of a bacterial 6-phytase on growth performance, coefficient of apparent ileal digestibility (CAID) of nutrients, blood parameters, and bone mineralization in broilers was evaluated. A total of 630 one-day-old male broilers were allocated to 7 dietary treatments, including positive control (PC) diet containing dicalcium phosphate, the PC marginally reduced in available P (avP) by 0.1% and calcium (Ca) by 0.2% vs. PC (NC1) or moderately reduced by 0.15 and 0.3% vs. PC (NC2), respectively, and four further diets comprising the NC1 and NC2 supplemented with 500 or 1000 FTU/kg of phytase in starter and finisher phases. A constant Ca to avP ratio was maintained across all diets. The body weight gain (BWG) and feed per unit gain (FCR) of birds fed NC1 and NC2 diets supplemented with phytase (500 and 1000 U/kg) was equivalent to that of birds fed the PC diet at 35 days. Phytase supplementation in the NC1 diet linearly increased the CAID of nitrogen (N) (p < 0.01), phosphorus (P) (p < 0.01), and Ca (p < 0.05). Additionally, phytase reduced (p < 0.01) excreta P concentration by approximately 27%, improved (p < 0.001) toe ash, and tended to increase tibia ash (p = 0.08), comparable with the PC. In conclusion, the addition of bacterial 6-phytase dosed in the range of 500-1000 FTU/kg was effective in replacing 1.5 g/kg avP and 3 g/kg Ca in broilers fed pelleted diets, using bone quality, BWG, and FCR as outcome measures.
